This second day of your 9 Days Lemosho Route Expedition is a transition from hotel comfort to the mountain’s wilderness.
After breakfast, your guide and mountain support crew will meet you at the hotel for another short briefing. Soon after, you will depart in a vehicle for a 3–4 hour scenic drive to Kilimanjaro National Park’s Londorossi Gate (2,200 m). Here, formalities such as permits and registration with the search and rescue service are completed.
From Londorossi, you continue by off-road vehicle up to 3,500 meters, your drop-off point. Along the way, you will get your first breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau, one of the most remarkable high-altitude landscapes on Kilimanjaro.
The trek from the drop-off point to Shira 1 Camp involves a modest altitude gain, making it manageable while allowing your body to begin acclimatization. By the time you arrive, the mountain crew will already have prepared tents and dinner.
Since this is your first night at high altitude, you may feel mild headaches or discomfort. It is important to report any symptoms to your guide promptly.
On this stage of the 9 Days Lemosho Route Expedition, you trek from Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m). The hike is relatively gentle, giving you the chance to enjoy panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains. Weather permitting, this camp offers the best views of Mount Meru.
After reaching camp and having lunch, you will rest before completing an acclimatization hike toward Lava Tower. This short trek adds 200 meters in altitude, helping your body adapt better for the summit days ahead.
Today’s highlight of your 9 days Lemosho Route Expedition, is reaching Lava Tower (4,630 m), one of the most important acclimatization points on the mountain. Although the trek has several ascents and descents, spending 1–2 hours here is essential for your body’s adaptation. After lunch, you descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m), located at the foot of the famous Barranco Wall.
This day of the 9 Days Lemosho Route Expedition begins with the thrilling climb of the Barranco Wall. Despite its steep appearance, the trail is straightforward and safe. After the ascent, the trek continues through a series of ridges and valleys until reaching Karanga Camp (4,035 m). Later in the afternoon, you complete another acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp before returning for rest.
From Karanga, you hike steadily to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the base camp for the final summit push. After a hot meal and rest, you complete a short acclimatization hike toward Kosovo Camp before returning to Barafu. Tonight, you will go to bed early to prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.
The most challenging and rewarding part of the 9 Days Lemosho Route Expedition begins before dawn. Departing around midnight, you climb steadily to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. The altitude makes the ascent tough, but the sense of achievement at the summit is unforgettable.
After enjoying the views and photos, you descend back to Barafu for a short rest before continuing down to Millennium Camp (3,820 m).
Descending through lush rainforest, you make your way to Mweka Gate (1,640 m). At the exit, climbers receive certificates of achievement, marking the successful completion of the 9 Days Lemosho Route Expedition. From there, you transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest.
