Tsavo East

Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East National Park is one of Kenya’s largest and oldest conservation areas. It covers 13,747 km² in the southeast of the country.
Established in 1948, it forms part of the vast Tsavo ecosystem along with its sister park, Tsavo West.
Together, they create one of the biggest protected wildlife areas in Africa.

Named after the Tsavo River, which flows through the park, the area plays a key role in Kenya’s natural heritage.
The river later joins the Athi River to form the Galana River, supporting both wildlife and vegetation.
Historically, the region was inhabited by the Orma and Kamba communities.
In 1898, it gained global attention due to the infamous Man-Eaters of Tsavo, lions that preyed on railway workers

Park Overview

Why Tsavo East Stands Out

Famous for its red-dusted elephants, Tsavo East offers some of the most striking wildlife sightings in Kenya.
Elephants roll in the region’s red soil, creating a dramatic visual against the open plains.
Additionally, the Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow runs along the park’s northern edge, stretching 300 kilometers.

Moreover, the Galana River enhances the landscape with features like Lugard Falls, crocodile pools, and hippo-filled channels.
Thanks to the park’s open terrain, visitors enjoy wide views and excellent chances to see wildlife throughout the day.

Wildlife and Birdlife

Tsavo East is a great destination for year-round game viewing.
Not only can visitors spot the Big Five, but they can also see cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, and various antelope species.
Unlike some other parks, Tsavo is known for its maneless male lions, adding to its unique identity.

Predators often roam the open savannas, while large grazing herds gather near water points like Mudanda Rock and Aruba Dam.
These spots are especially active during the dry season, when animals rely heavily on permanent water sources.

In addition, birdwatchers will find paradise here, with over 500 species recorded. From raptors to vibrant bee-eaters, the park teems with avian life.
