Rubondo Island National Park

Rubondo Island National Park: Tanzania’s Safari on Water

Hidden in the southwestern corner of Lake Victoria, Rubondo Island National Park is one of Tanzania’s most unique and least visited wildlife destinations. This lush, green island offers an unusual safari experience ,one where water, forest, and wildlife come together in complete harmony.

As Tanzania’s only island national park, Rubondo is a rare gem that appeals to adventurers, birdwatchers, nature lovers, and those seeking a remote escape far from the traditional safari routes.

What Makes Rubondo Island Special?

Rubondo Island is not just a place to see wildlife , it’s a place where wildlife thrives in solitude. The island covers 456 square kilometers, including the main island and 11 smaller islets. Since the 1960s, it has been a refuge for animals rescued and reintroduced from other parts of Africa.

The park is known for its thriving chimpanzee population, introduced in the late 20th century. Although sightings are not guaranteed due to the forest density, hearing the calls of wild chimpanzees echo through the jungle is an experience like no other.

Rubondo is also home to:

  • Elephants
  • Giraffes
  • Hippos
  • Sitatunga antelope
  • Bushbucks
  • Crocodiles
  • Monitor lizards

Add to that the impressive birdlife over 300 species  and it’s easy to see why Rubondo is often described as a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and birders.

What to Do on Rubondo Island

Unlike the dusty plains of mainland safaris, Rubondo offers a different kind of adventure. Activities include:

  • Chimpanzee trekking : Learn about the conservation story and walk through dense forest in search of Rubondo’s elusive chimps.
  • Game drives : Explore open grasslands and forest edges with a guide.
  • Boat safaris : Cruise around the island’s shores to spot hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic birds.
  • Fishing :  Lake Victoria offers excellent catch-and-release fishing, including the legendary Nile perch.
  • Birdwatching : From African fish eagles to colorful kingfishers, the variety is astonishing.
  • Guided nature walks : Discover hidden waterfalls, insects, and unique flora that cover the island.

With few other tourists around, every activity on Rubondo feels exclusive and personal.

When to Visit Rubondo Island National Park

The best time to visit Rubondo Island is during the dry seasons, from June to October and December to February. These months offer easier access to trails and clearer chances to spot wildlife.

However, the green season (March to May) transforms the island into a lush, tropical haven ,perfect for photographers and birdwatchers who don’t mind occasional rain.

Getting There

Rubondo Island is remote, but well worth the journey. The park can be reached by scheduled or charter flights from Arusha or Mwanza. From there, a boat transfer takes you across the calm waters of Lake Victoria to the island.
