Uganda Big Five Safari-Where to See the Big Five

Uganda Big Five Safari

Uganda Big Five Safari-Where to See the Big Five

A Uganda Big Five Safari gives travelers the chance to search for Africa’s five iconic mammals: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. Uganda offers excellent opportunities to see four of these animals in its major savannah parks, while rhino tracking takes place at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Therefore, a complete Big Five experience usually combines more than one destination.

The best places to focus on are Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, and Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Each destination offers a different wildlife experience, making a multi-destination safari the best way to search for all five.

Where to See the Big Five in Uganda

Big Five Animal Best Places to See It
Lion Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley
Leopard Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley
Elephant Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley
Buffalo Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley
Rhino Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Lion

Lions are among the most exciting animals to search for during a Uganda Big Five Safari. Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, and Kidepo Valley National Parks offer some of the country’s strongest opportunities for lion sightings.

Queen Elizabeth is particularly interesting because the Ishasha sector is known for its tree-climbing lions. In other parts of the park, you can also search for lions across the open savannah during game drives.

Murchison Falls provides another excellent setting, with open grasslands that support both predators and their prey. Meanwhile, Kidepo Valley offers a more remote environment with fewer safari vehicles.

Leopard

Leopards are one of the more challenging Big Five animals to find. They are solitary and often remain hidden during the heat of the day.

Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, and Kidepo Valley provide opportunities to search for leopards. Early morning and late afternoon game drives can be particularly useful because leopards are more active during cooler periods.

Even in excellent wildlife areas, leopard sightings are never guaranteed. Patience and an experienced safari guide can make a significant difference.

Elephant

African elephants can be seen in several of Uganda’s major savannah parks. Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth are particularly good choices for travelers interested in elephant viewing. Kidepo Valley also provides opportunities to see elephants in a more remote setting.

In Murchison Falls, you may see elephants around the savannah and close to the Victoria Nile. A boat safari can provide another perspective as wildlife gathers around the river.

In Queen Elizabeth, elephants can also appear around the Kazinga Channel, making a combination of game drives and a boat safari especially rewarding.

Buffalo

Buffalo are among the more commonly encountered members of the Big Five in Uganda. They can be found in Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, and Kidepo Valley, often moving in groups across grasslands and near water.

During game drives, you may see large herds grazing in open areas. Their presence also adds to the predator experience because buffalo form part of the prey base for lions.

Rhino

Rhinos are an important part of a Uganda Big Five Safari, but they require a different experience from the other four animals.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the main destination for rhino tracking in Uganda. Rather than searching for rhinos during a traditional game drive, visitors can experience guided tracking on foot.

Ziwa also fits conveniently into many northern Uganda safari routes, particularly trips that continue toward Murchison Falls. This makes it practical to combine rhino tracking with a wider wildlife safari.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is one of the strongest destinations for a Uganda Big Five Safari. The park provides opportunities to search for lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo across its savannah landscapes.

A safari here can also include a boat experience along the Nile, adding another way to observe wildlife around the water.

For travelers with limited time, combining Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Murchison Falls creates one of the most practical ways to experience the Big Five.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is another excellent Big Five destination. Its savannah, wetlands, and woodland habitats support lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo.

The park is especially famous for its tree-climbing lions in Ishasha. You can also add a boat safari along the Kazinga Channel to see wildlife around the water.

Kidepo Valley National Park

For travelers looking for a more remote Uganda Big Five Safari, Kidepo Valley National Park offers a different experience.

The park’s wide valleys, rugged mountains, and relatively low visitor numbers create a peaceful wilderness atmosphere. Lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo can be found here, while the park is also known for its diverse wildlife.

Kidepo works particularly well for travelers who have more time and want to explore a less-visited part of Uganda.

Best Big Five Safari Combination

For a practical Big Five experience, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary + Murchison Falls National Park is a strong combination. Ziwa provides the rhino experience, while Murchison Falls offers opportunities to search for the other four animals.

Travelers with more time can add Queen Elizabeth National Park for additional wildlife opportunities and the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha.

For a longer wildlife adventure, Kidepo Valley National Park adds a remote and scenic dimension to the journey.
